Abe's Mini Muffins (Review): 9 Dairy-Free, Egg-Free, Nut-Free Flavors

2022-11-07 16:13:24 By : Ms. Alice Yang

I’m betting several of you have already discovered these little delights in the bakery or refrigerated section at your local grocer. Abe’s Mini Muffins are classic-style pastries that just happen to be dairy-free, egg-free, nut-free, and sesame-free!

As a little back story, the founder of Pearl River Pastry has a son named Abe who is lactose intolerant and allergic to nuts, eggs, and seeds. He created these dairy-free, allergy-friendly mini muffins just for him! Abe’s Mini Muffins are often touted as “school safe,” and they are a great addition to lunch boxes. But you can read the full allergen information below.

Pearl River Pastry was kind enough to send us 6-pack samples of each flavor of Abe’s Mini Muffins (they are also available in 12-packs). This was enough to help me make some more new friends in our building, and get some outside opinions. Spoiler: They were loved by all, including the most die hard dairy-eating of the bunch.

I’m updating this post in 2020, but since this is an older post, it includes our tasting notes for the varieties that we’ve tried!

I opened this package of Abe’s Mini Muffins first because I knew it would be a popular pick. The bakers were oh-so-generous with those semi-sweet mini morsels. Not only are they dotted all over the tops, they are also smattered throughout. These are definitely muffin-like and tender, with perfect sweet vanilla undertones.

Ingredients: non-gmo sugar, non-gmo unenriched flour, non-gmo organic rice milk (filtered water, brown rice [partially milled], nexpeller pressed canola oil and/or safflower oil and/or sunflower oil, tricalcium phosphate, sea salt, vitamin a palmitate, vitamin d2, vitamin b12), non-gmo expeller pressed canola oil, non-gmo chocolate (sugar, chocolate liquor, cocoa butter, sunflower lecithin (an emulsifier), vanilla, salt), water, salt, non-gmo baking powder (monocalcium phosphate, sodium bicarbonate [baking soda], non-gmo corn starch), vanilla (water, ethyl alcohol, vanilla bean extractives).*

Nutrition (per 2 mini muffins): 250 calories, 11g fat, 35g carbs, 1g fiber, 22g sugars (includes 16g added sugars), 3 protein.*

The packaging for these Abe’s Mini Muffins says “sweet and savory” but they were all sweet to me. Tasty, and with that perfect, moist, tender, lightly cakey cornbread texture, but I felt the sweetness overpowered the cornbread flavor a bit. I would love for them to take down the sugar by about 25% in this flavor. BUT, my aunt tried them and thought they were perfect as is.

Ingredients: non-gmo sugar, non-gmo organic rice milk (filtered water, brown rice [partially milled], expeller pressed canola oil and/or safflower oil and/or sunflower oil, tricalcium phosphate, sea salt, vitamin a palmitate, vitamin d2, vitamin b12), non-gmo unenriched flour, non-gmo expeller pressed canola oil, water, non-gmo corn meal, salt, non-gmo baking powder (monocalcium phosphate, sodium bicarbonate [baking soda], non-gmo corn starch), baking soda (sodium bicarbonate).*

Nutrition (per 2 mini muffins): 210 calories, 10g fat, 30g carbs, 0g fiber, 17g sugars (includes 16g added sugars), 2g protein.*

Of course this flavor was tops on my list for sampling. I mean, who doesn’t love blueberry muffins? As you can see below, they got the texture just right – perfectly soft and cake-y but also lightly moist and tender. The flavor was familiar and comforting with strong notes of vanilla and scrumptious sweet blueberries. Honestly, these Abe’s Mini Muffins were a little over the top sweet for me, but still impossible to resist.

Ingredients: non-gmo sugar, non-gmo unenriched flour, non-gmo organic rice milk (filtered water, brown rice [partially milled], expeller pressed canola oil and/or safflower oil and/or sunflower oil, tricalcium phosphate, sea salt, vitamin a palmitate, vitamin d2, vitamin b12), non-gmo expeller pressed canola oil, water, blueberries, salt, non-gmo baking powder (monocalcium phosphate, sodium bicarbonate [baking soda], non-gmo corn starch), baking soda (sodium bicarbonate), natural lemon flavor, vanilla (water, ethyl alcohol, vanilla bean extractives).*

We loved the cranberries and the sweet orange undertones in these Abe’s Mini Muffins. These were just a touch dry and chewy, but that provided a light sugary top crust. They were good and not quite as sweet as the cornbread, but still just a touch too sugary overall to hit our favorites list.

Ingredients: non-gmo sugar, non-gmo unenriched flour, non-gmo organic rice milk (filtered water, brown rice [partially milled], expeller pressed canola oil and/or safflower oil and/or sunflower oil, tricalcium phosphate, sea salt, vitamin a palmitate, vitamin d2, vitamin b12), non-gmo expeller pressed canola oil, cranberries, water, orange juice, orange zest, salt, non-gmo baking powder (monocalcium phosphate, sodium bicarbonate [baking soda], non-gmo corn starch), baking soda (sodium bicarbonate).*

Chocolate in cake or muffin form isn’t my cup of tea, but I have to admit that these little gems were not too sweet and near perfect with a slathering of nut or seed butter “frosting”. Naturally, they were a big hit among all of the chocolate cake fans (which could have been everyone but me!).

Ingredients: water, non-gmo unenriched flour, non-gmo sugar, non-gmo expeller pressed canola oil, non-gmo cocoa powder, non-gmo sweet potatoes, vinegar, baking soda (sodium bicarbonate), non-gmo invert sugar, salt.*

Nutrition (per 2 mini muffins): 210 calories, 9g fat, 31g carbs, 1g fiber, 17g sugars (includes 16g added sugars), 2g protein.*

I really liked these. They have a sweet carrot cake vibe in both the taste and texture, with a big infusion of coconut. You definitely need to be a fan of both carrot and coconut to like these. Luckily, I am and it seems many others are, too, as these were snatched up quite quickly.

Ingredients: non-gmo sugar, non-gmo unenriched flour, carrots, non-gmo expeller pressed canola oil, apple sauce, coconut, pineapple, water, baking soda (sodium bicarbonate), vanilla (water, ethyl alcohol, vanilla bean extractives), salt, cinnamon.*

The bakers at Abe’s Mini Muffins got this classic flavor right with nice lemony essence and the perfect smattering of poppy seeds. The delicious flavor and spot-on moist cake-like experience make this a pleasant selection to accompany a big mug of tea.

Ingredients: non-gmo sugar, non-gmo unenriched flour, non-gmo organic rice milk (filtered water, brown rice [partially milled], expeller pressed canola oil and/or safflower oil and/or sunflower oil, tricalcium phosphate, sea salt, vitamin a palmitate, vitamin d2, vitamin b12), non-gmo expeller pressed canola oil, water, poppy seeds, natural lemon flavor, salt, non-gmo baking powder (monocalcium phosphate, sodium bicarbonate [baking soda], non-gmo corn starch), baking soda (sodium bicarbonate).*

We haven’t tried this variety, but I’ve heard it’s a fall favorite.

The flavor of these Abe’s Mini Muffins was sweet, very sweet, but warm and awesome. We honestly couldn’t get enough. However, our batch had a rather odd texture for a muffin – more like a chewy cookie. We kind of liked them that way, but they definitely weren’t muffin-like.

Ingredients: non-gmo sugar, non-gmo unenriched flour, non-gmo expeller pressed canola oil, apple sauce, apple puree, water, apple cider, baking soda (sodium bicarbonate), vanilla (water, ethyl alcohol, vanilla bean extractives), salt, cinnamon, allspice.*

Nutrition (per 2 mini muffins): 270 calories, 11g fat, 42g carbs, <1g fiber, 24g sugars (includes 23g added sugars), 3g protein.*

My young grandson was born with an eating disorder. He is 5 now and only eat a few things. The coconut carrot was one of them until the recipe was changed. Then we found the pumpkin ones and he said you did it these are the ones I like. But now we can’t find them since they are seasonal.

I absolutely LOVED the blueberry ones. They were moist, perfectly spongy and not overly sweet. I loved that some of the blueberries on top had some bite to them. It was a great mix of textures and these are totally my fave. My husband is not a sweets guy, and he devoured a 12 pack of the carrot coconut ones within 4 days, which is really impressive from him. I can’t wait to try the other flavours!

Light, fluffy, and the perfect size!

These are the bomb I’m a vegetarian and I’m always looking for vegan tasty treats and Abe’s muffins hit it right out the park my favorite ones are the orange cranberry and blueberry I do plan to pick up the corn muffins on my next visit to whole foods .now I have tried the apple cider ones and they were dry ..now question these are so popular and delicious and the fact that schools now won’t allow any other snacks in schools because of allergies and I understand but can the Abe company please put these muffins in Walmart or Target or Wegmans maybe Safeway like they need to be available NOT everybody can easily get these in their area seems like every state has a Walmart please consider putting these muffins there please and thank u

You really can’t go wrong with these mini muffins. They might “free from” but they taste like good, sweet, homemade muffins. My personal favorite was the Carrot Coconut, my husband chose the Wild Blueberry and Chocolate Chip (he couldn’t pick just one), and my aunt was loyal to the Cornbread. BUT we also thoroughly enjoyed the Apple Cider (different texture like noted above) and Lemon Poppyseed too.

Hi Alisa, thoroughly enjoyed reading your review. I just purchased a box of Abe’s chocolate chip muffin, can’t wait to eat them. I just had a quick question. The box mentions a date of the next week (8/28/19). I believe it is probably the best-by date.

My concern is, can I keep them at room temperature instead of storing them in the fridge? I plan to eat them within 4-5 days. Also, can we store them in a container and carry them safely for lunch?

Thank you. I really look forward to reading more amazing reviews on your website.

Hi Syed, if I recall, they could be kept at room temperature for several days. My personal rule for sweet baked goods is no more than 2 days, then I freeze them. But you can definitely pack them along. For freshness, I always freeze, and then pop them out as I need them. After a couple days at room temperature, all quick breads start to lose their freshness quite a bit, but if you freeze them (just for the short term, not the deep freeze) right away, they maintain freshness better. I would personally keep some out for the next day or two, and freeze the rest. Then when you need some for lunch, just pack along some frozen ones. They’ll defrost within an hour or two and be ready to eat!

I like to know about your fan club can you write to me it was mention on one of your pages in my computer. I was very excited about your abes muffins and found them to be a treasure to the kids and will be ordering very soon. Thanks

Hi Madeline, we’re not affiliated with Abe’s – you will need to contact them directly.

Do these need to be frozen or kept refrigerated?

Like most muffins, they keep for a few days at room temperature. I would keep them frozen until ready to crack them open.

Do you know of any copycat recipe where I could make these myself??? They are sooo good, but I would love to be able to make my own batch of them.

I don’t, but I could certainly make one! Do you have a favorite flavor?

Mm, I love these! I don’t know why we still use dairy in baked goods. Non-dairy is just as good.

Hi Abes muffins contacted you 6 mos- 1 yr ago about Abes mufffins as T-riffic and almost addictive..for those of us who actually are not sugar freaks..we are fast realizing that Abe needs to shift into a healthier vibe with a change to stevia instead of 16 grams of sugar..for 2 muffins which ive been doing with Charlie Rose! ..even at Whole foods folks are .starting to smile, reach for them and then say uh uh….me too as of this e-mail ..oh well..bye bye most reluctantly to Abes unless you start a Stevia product..no big deal..tastes the same..goodluck sherry

Hi Sherry, we’re not affiliated with Abe’s. This is a third party review. You will need to contact them directly. They can be reached via their Facebook Page here – https://www.facebook.com/AbesDairyFree/

Can I buy them online? I love them and have a hard time finding them.

Hi Carol, I haven’t seen them online. You might ask Vegan Essentials to start carrying them (they ship nationwide and carry fresh baked goods) or ask your local natural food store to order them in. I know that Whole Foods and Natural Grocers have this brand in their systems, so at least those stores should be able to start ordering them if requested by shoppers.

I am the pickiest eater in the world I hate chocolate, but I wanted to try vegan food I first bought these chocolate chip muffins, and I went home and tasted it. OMG it is THE GREATEST THINGS EVER I usually eat 8 per day, I’m not obese or anything I’m actually underweight, and OMG please buy these they are delicious does anybody know how I can contact the owners?

Hi Allison, awesome that you loved them as much as we did! There should be links in this post direct to the manufacturer / owners where you can contact them.

Just saw the corn muffins at Whole Foods Belmar (Lakewood, Colorado). Even though I’ve eaten dinner already, I just ate four of them! Yum yum!

Haha, they are addictive! Easy to eat several of them.

Abe’s moffins are out of this world. From the first time I bought it I became addicted to it. My daughter is not a Vegan and I convinced her to taste it and since then she and my granddaughter are hooked on it. When we run one of us will go to WholeFoods to replenish our stock. The taste is deliciously moist that it melts in your mouth. Try it you would never stop eating it. The price is affordable, not overpriced like most products in WholeFoods. I love this product and if you are looking for a great desert you would love it too.

That’s awesome – thanks for sharing your review of Abe’s mini muffins, too! I was actually just at Natural Grocers wondering if I should buy some ?

Would you happen to know where we can purchase in southern cal?

I would check with the company directly!

I’ve never seen this product in my grocery stores in PA. I would love to purchase them, and I never knew such foods, could be made without dairy. This is a great site!
