One year after seeing its 12-year reign halted, the Champlain Valley girls reclaimed the Division I title at Saturday's Vermont high school cross-country running state championships at Thetford Academy.

And the Redhawks did so in emphatic fashion.

Behind individual winner Alice Kredell, CVU occupied half the spots in the top 10 — with two more runners finishing in the top 22 — to tally 27 points and easily out-distance runner-up Essex (75) and defending champion Burlington (95).

The U-32 girls cruised to their second D-II crown in three years, while the Thetford girls went back-to-back in D-III. On the boys side, St. Johnsbury (D-I) retained its title from a year ago, U-32 (D-II) held off Montpelier for a seventh straight crown and Craftsbury (D-III) pulled off a three-peat.

Kredell, a sophomore, toured the Thetford's 5k course in 19 minutes, 49 seconds to edge Scarlet Stimson of Essex (19:51.1), Mount Mansfield's Tess Drury (19:54.2) and teammate Estella Laird (20:14.4). Gillian Fairfax paced defending champion BHS with a fifth-place showing.

Led by Kredell and Laird, CVU also saw Audrey Neilson (seventh), Amelie Scharf (eighth) and Lydia Donahue (10th) claim top-10 finishes. Charlotte Crum nabbed 14th and Ava Rohrbaugh placed 22nd to round out the Redhawks, who should contend for the New England title.

In D-II, Ginger Long raced to the individual victory (20:38.9) and beat Madeline Harris of Burr and Burton by nearly 15 seconds.

After Long, Amy Felice (third), Claire Serrano (fourth), Jane Miller-Arsenault (seventh) and Avery Ryan (12th) helped the Raiders to a 27-point championship total. Middlebury took second with 81 points.

And in D-III, Anita Miller of White River Valley claimed the state crown over Thetford's Madelyn Durkee (20:42.6 to 21:01.3). Durkee's Thetford Panthers placed five runners in the top 15.

Matthew Servin stormed to the individual championship in the D-I boys field. The senior churned out a 16:36.7, finishing ahead of runner-up Porter Hurteau of BFA-St. Albans (17:05.2) and St. Johnsbury's Andrew Thornton-Sherman (17:06.8).

The team title, though, belonged to St. Johnsbury for a second straight year. Despite the graduation of last year's champion, Evan Thornton-Sherman, the Hilltoppers gobbled up five spots in the top 15: Thornton-Sherman (third), Carson Eames (seventh), Charlie Krebs (ninth), Nathan Lenzini (12th) and Nathaniel Bernier (13th).

Two more runners finished in the top 20 (Ari Leven in 16th, Isaac Lenzini in 17th) for SJA, which totaled 44 points in the narrow four-point win over CVU. Essex took third behind Luke Miklus' fourth and Kelton Poirier's sixth.

In D-II, U-32's seven-peat came down to the wire. U-32's Taggart Schrader nipped Montpelier's Noah Rivera in a photo finish for sixth in what proved to be the difference in a two-point triumph over the Solons (52 to 54).

Additionally for U-32, Cyrus Hansen ran to runner-up honors (17:07.6), Sargent Burns took fifth and Wilder Brown finished eighth. Montpelier's Avery Smart cruised to the individual crown with a time of 16:55.6.

And in D-III, Craftsbury rolled to a third straight crown, tallying 18 points to Stowe's 49. Craftsbury's Charlie Kehler won the individual race (17:30.2) as Craftsbury nabbed five top-10 finishes.
